We can see the evolution of Frank sheeran as truck driver to a big hit-man and more. You can find out that years are passing only by the age appearance of the characters other than that no where inside the movie we cant find any dates or years in screen.
A deep friendship between the Frank & Russell was narrated very well. In one of the important day of Frank Sheeran life timeline, after the event Russell wears a ring to him and will say this,
" Russell Bufalino: You know how strong I made you? You know how strong?
[he kisses Frank on the cheek]

In the movie you can find many backstories mean without disturbing the main plots of the film. If you are a GTA game fan you can relate or feel that essence of it sometimes in the screen.
Corruption is same as everywhere and in every country, is one of the key content you can get it from the movie.
Frank's daughter Peggy from his childhood he will be keep guessing what his father's profession and at some point he came to know everything about his father. From that to very till end, the relationship between Frank & his family will came to an end.
At the final stages of his life Frank says one of famous dialogues in movie " Oh, boy, you don't know how fast time goes by until you get there". (Time Flies) when he was at an old age home.
